    This last Thursday in July, join WORD! and U.Matters for a particularly special edition, launching and celebrating an online exhibition of writing and drawing for wellbeing, curated by poet, Lydia Towsey and artist, Scott Bridgwood - and headlined by the internationally acclaimed, writer and artist, George Szirtes. Hear from George - and via a series of live readings and of course sumptuous visuals - step into an online gallery, created by people from across our community over the last year of Lockdown.

    A WORD! on George...

    George Szirtes was born in 1948 in Budapest and came to England following the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, studying at the art academies of London and Leeds before establishing himself as a painter. His first collection of poetry, The Slant Door, won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in 1979.

    Among his many other books, Reel was awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2004 - and he has been nominated for it twice since. The recipient of numerous honours - including, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Doctorate from the University of East Anglia; George has won numerous international prizes for his poetry, and the Man Booker International Prize for his translations of novels by László Krasznahorkai.
